Any organization that has proprietary information regarding their internal alliances, partnerships, pricing, customer lists, contracts, hiring data, and any sensitive documents and data should be concerned with and take action on shredding both paper and devices when they are no longer relevant.
According to CybersecurityHub, the industries that have been targeted and have suffered the most breaches are:
The era of shredding documents in-house and then adding them to recycling is long gone. Too many companies have found out the hard way that simple single strip shredding has allowed criminals to reassemble their critical and important organizational and client/patient information so that it can be sold on the dark web, causing company breaches, identity theft, and fines for abusing state and federal laws for data protection. There is a requirement for businesses to take document destruction seriously by hiring licensed and professional document destruction companies such as SHREDDRS, who will guarantee that all documents are shredded to the maximum so that the information can never be used.

There are various types of document shredders and each one brings specific security needs.
Strip-Cut Shredders: These shredders make use of rotating blades that slice paper into long strips. This was one of the most popular shredder types and is considered to be the least secure. While this shredder type is fine for information that doesn’t cross into any level of security, the fact that criminals can reassemble the strips makes this shredder a danger. Strip-cut shredders vary in the size of strips from 1/16”-3/4” wide and from 30-50 parallel strips. Security experts have indicated that the more strips per page, the more effective the shredder. There are some strip-cut shredders that are “continuous” which means that they will continue to shred no matter what the length of the document.
Cross-Cut Shredders: Another name for this type of shredder is “confetti shredder,” and these are popular in home and business environments. The blades on the shredder are specially designed to slice through the paper in different shapes such as small squares or diamonds. This makes any attempt at reassembling extremely difficult. Paper cutting can range from 1/32”-3/8” in width and can produce from 300-900 pieces of paper from a single standard A4 document size. Beyond creating tiny pieces of paper, the results are more compact.
Micro-Cut Shredders: These are considered to be one of the most secure forms of document shredding and is typically used in high security environments. The micro-cut shredders are designed to cut paper into tiny particles that can reduce a page to 12,000 pieces. The cutting blades cut both width and length to such a small degree that they could never be reassembled and they compact so that the results takes up less space.
Disintegrators: This type of shredder is a heavy-duty style, with multiple blades designed to shred high volumes of documents. The resulting shredded size is so small that it can pass through a mesh or sizing screen and is totally obliterated. There are two blades mounted into fixed positions so they capture the document in the same way and the other 2-5 blades rotate at different sizes and angles to continue to cut the paper. While designed to handle large capacities, they may heat up for long-term, continuous use.
Hammermills: Very similar to disintegrators, this type of shredder is a heavy-duty style. Designed for large scale shredding, they have rotating hammers that pulverize the document and pound the results through a sizing screen to make sure that the pieces are completely destroyed and turned into dust. Some hammermills achieve their shredding goals with knife blades, blunt edges of a combination of both technologies.
Industrial Shredders: These shredders are a kind of all in one, created to shred multiple types of materials including paper, corrugated boxes, beverage containers, and plastics. These are large, high-tech devices that require special voltage lines. The design is such that the machinery can operate with little or no human intervention. Industrial shredders are used to create more eco-friendly results.
Pierce and Tear Shredders: This type of shredder is considered to be high security and is designed to perform in more industrial applications. The process first punches holes in the material and then tears the material apart within the shredder so that it achieves total destruction. The pierce and tear shredders can accommodate a variety of materials including documents and cardboard.
