There are various types of document shredders and each one brings specific security needs.
Strip-Cut Shredders: These shredders make use of rotating blades that slice paper into long strips. This was one of the most popular shredder types and is considered to be the least secure. While this shredder type is fine for information that doesn’t cross into any level of security, the fact that criminals can reassemble the strips makes this shredder a danger. Strip-cut shredders vary in the size of strips from 1/16”-3/4” wide and from 30-50 parallel strips. Security experts have indicated that the more strips per page, the more effective the shredder. There are some strip-cut shredders that are “continuous” which means that they will continue to shred no matter what the length of the document.
Micro-Cut Shredders: These are considered to be one of the most secure forms of document shredding and is typically used in high security environments. The micro-cut shredders are designed to cut paper into tiny particles that can reduce a page to 12,000 pieces. The cutting blades cut both width and length to such a small degree that they could never be reassembled and they compact so that the results takes up less space.
There are a few ways for complete destruction for technology devices and peripherals. While many fall under the “name” of shredding, the processes differ from those that shred paper. Once a device reaches end-of-life, is no longer needed, is being replaced with an upgrade, or is simply not functioning to accepted standard, it is critical that the device is rendered harmless and no longer contains any information or data that could be accessed. The type of data destruction depends upon if the device will be donated or sold, or if it is to be completely destroyed.
Any technology devices that has a hard drive or memory card is liable for criminal activity. As our society continues to add new technologies, this list will continue to expand.
