Dyer, IN Secure Document Shredding

Shredding Services Highland, IN

When most people think of shredding, they automatically default to paper or document shredding. However, the amount of documents being transferred to digital formats takes the concept of shredding to entirely new levels. The technologies that we store critical information is now viewed as a priority for destruction, and as we attempt to transition to a paperless society, and with the addition of state and federal laws regarding protection of proprietary and customer/patient data, every business is being faced with the requirement for both document and digital shredding. To accomplish these tasks on a high security level, organizations are turning to licensed, professional data destruction companies for shredding services.

Types of Document Destruction

There are various types of document shredders and each one brings specific security needs. These shredders make use of rotating blades that slice paper into long strips. This was one of the most popular shredder types and is considered to be the least secure. While this shredder type is fine for information that doesn’t cross into any level of security, the fact that criminals can reassemble the strips makes this shredder a danger. Strip-cut shredders vary in the size of strips from 1/16”-3/4” wide and from 30-50 parallel strips. Security experts have indicated that the more strips per page, the more effective the shredder. There are some strip-cut shredders that are “continuous” which means that they will continue to shred no matter what the length of the document. Another name for this type of shredder is “confetti shredder,” and these are popular in home and business environments. The blades on the shredder are specially designed to slice through the paper in different shapes such as small squares or diamonds. This makes any attempt at reassembling extremely difficult. Paper cutting can range from 1/32”-3/8” in width and can produce from 300-900 pieces of paper from a single standard A4 document size. Beyond creating tiny pieces of paper, the results are more compact.

Why Shredding Services Are Important

Breaches may be most known as those accomplished by hackers that break into a network, however, criminals will attempt any form of theft to access proprietary and personal information. One of the easiest methods of theft is insecure disposal and re-use of devices that have reached end-of-life and are replaced by newer technologies. Tech savvy criminals can buy these devices on eBay, look for them at nonprofits where they are donated, or buy them at bulk commercial locations where they are sold for parts. Patient, customer, client, and company information is held on these devices when an organization simply assumed that “deleting” would get rid of the data.
